500K Riders. Are You Rally-Ready for the Rush?

By Zac Jones, Head of Sales and Marketing, One Dealer Lane · Approximately a 5-minute read

Table of contents

Rally buyers are getting a taste of a modern way to buy. The only question is whether your desk can keep up.

Right now, as you read this, Main Street in Sturgis is fender-to-fender with chrome. The 86th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is running August 7–16, 2026 — themed “Sturgis Salutes America” for the country’s 250th — and more than 500,000 riders are pointed at the same patch of South Dakota.

There’s the Sturgis you see on the highlight reel. Then there’s the Sturgis the dealers see.

For about ten days every August, the rally turns into the single biggest retail window in all of powersports. The OEMs run demo fleets all week — Harley, Indian, and the rest of the cruiser and touring world treat Sturgis like their Super Bowl.

And here’s the part nobody puts on the highlight reel: most stores leave money on the table because they don’t have the right tools. One operation didn’t.

The two-week window that makes or breaks a year

Talk to anyone who’s worked a rally and they’ll tell you the same thing — the traffic isn’t the problem. The traffic shows up. Half a million people with their boots on, their PTO booked, and a credit profile already daydreaming about a new bagger. The problem is throughput.

When 200 people walk your floor in a day, the bottleneck is never desire. It’s how fast you go from “I love it” to “it’s mine.” Every minute a buyer waits on a quote, a credit decision, or a triple-booked manager is a minute a competitor down the road is closing instead. On a normal Tuesday, a slow desk costs you a unit. During Sturgis week, a slow desk costs you dozens.

The dealers who win the rally aren’t the ones with the most inventory or the biggest tent. They’re the ones who can close at the speed of the crowd — from anywhere.

What “winning the rally” looks like

We’ve got the receipts. Sonic Automotive’s Sturgis and Black Hills Harley-Davidson stores ran their 2025 rally on One Dealer Lane — and put up a record. In roughly two weeks, the operation moved just shy of 1,300 motorcycles and took in around 675 trades.

Sit with both of those numbers, because together they tell the real story.

Nearly 1,300 units in two weeks is a bike rolling off the floor every few minutes the doors were open — the kind of pace that breaks a paper-and-whiteboard operation by lunch on day one. Sonic publicly called 2025 a record rally, with a single-day peak of 135 bikes and sales shipped to all 50 states.

But the ~675 trades might be the smarter number. While other stores scrambled just to sell, the team was also restocking — pulling in used bikes at the exact moment pre-owned cruisers are white-hot and buyers are everywhere. That’s two revenue engines running at full throttle, in the same two weeks, through one system.

You don’t hit that with hustle alone. You don’t hit it by throwing bodies at a broken process. You hit it when every step between the test ride and the signature is fast, clean, and built to repeat.

The playbook underneath the numbers

Here’s what a rally-ready operation looks like when the software is doing the heavy lifting:

They split the work so the desk never became the line. A dedicated data-entry team built quotes and entered customer and unit details up front in ODL — so F&I could focus on what F&I is for: presenting the menu and closing. No single person was the bottleneck.

Everything was pre-built before the first rider walked in. Product menus and pricing were fully configured in Menu Lane ahead of the rally. Staff weren’t setting anything up in the chaos — they were trained to present, not configure. ODL absorbed the prep so the team could absorb the crowd.

One clean path from quote to close. Quote → deal → digital credit app in Quick Lane → interactive F&I menu in Menu Lane → digital signature → pushed straight to the Lightspeed DMS at close. No re-keying the same customer into four systems. No deals falling through the cracks.

They could find any deal in seconds. Under that kind of volume, “where’s that customer’s paperwork?” is a deal-killer. Global search — by name, phone, email, or deal ID — pulled up any deal instantly, instead of digging through a whiteboard or a stack of folders.

As ODL co-founder Jason White puts it: “Every time a salesperson says ‘hold on, let me check,’ you lose customer momentum. ODL eliminates that.” At a normal store that’s a nice-to-have. At Sturgis, with a line out the door, momentum is the business.

That’s the whole idea behind One Dealer Lane: built for speed, designed for powersports. Desking through Sales Lane, credit and lending through Quick Lane, and F&I menus through Menu Lane — all pulled into one workflow under the Fast Lane hub — so the bottleneck stops being your process and starts being how many bikes you can physically wheel onto the floor.

2026: the crowd is bigger, and the tools are faster

This year the upside is even bigger. Sonic is bringing what it calls the largest Harley-Davidson inventory ever assembled in one location — more than 1,200 new and pre-owned bikes across its Sturgis and Black Hills stores — plus a new “Rally Ready” pre-sale program that lets buyers reserve a bike online and pick it up during rally week. Harley is debuting its new Deadwood model and running official demo rides all week (including at Black Hills Harley-Davidson in Rapid City); Indian is countering with a limited Chief Vintage “Sturgis, SD Edition.” Layer in America’s 250th and the “Sturgis Salutes America” theme, and the 2026 crowd has every reason to buy.

The energy isn’t only on the showroom floor. Right across the street from the Sturgis store, Gas Monkey Bar & Grill is giving away a custom 250th-anniversary Harley Low Rider S live on Thursday, Aug. 13 — the kind of block-party traffic that turns curiosity into buyers.

But more inventory and more traffic only pay off if your desk can keep pace. That’s where this year’s ODL platform is sharper: The busier the floor, the more that speed compounds.

You don’t have to be in the Black Hills to cash in on Sturgis

Here’s the angle a lot of stores miss: the rally doesn’t just create buyers in South Dakota. It creates them everywhere. For weeks before August, riders all over the country decide they’re not making the trip on last year’s bike. They want the upgrade before they roll out.

That’s a nationwide pre-rally buying wave — and the dealer who can quote them fast, get them approved, and get them riding before they pack the saddlebags is the one who captures it. Whether you’re working Main Street in Sturgis or a showroom a thousand miles away, the rally is a deadline your customers set for themselves. The only question is whether your store is fast enough to meet it.

The clock is the crowd — and it’s already running

Sturgis doesn’t wait for anyone. The riders are here. The OEM demo fleets are staged. The single highest-traffic window of your year is happening right now — and the stores that prepped their process, not just their inventory, are the ones who’ll look back on August the way the record-setters do: as the best two weeks they’ve ever had.

The traffic is here either way. The only thing in your control is whether you’re built to close it.
